Matthew 5:13-15 | Faith & Politics

Getting to Know You:
  1. Discuss the first time you were allowed to vote in a presidential election. What issues were important then as compared to now?
Digging Deeper:
  1. Read Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:4-5, Psalm 106:37-38 and Genesis 1:28. According to God, why is abortion wrong? Why does abortion have such an appeal to Americans? How would you share your position with the opposing side?
  2. Read Matthew 5:13-16, Proverbs 25:26, Proverbs 24:23-25 and Proverbs 24:11. Voting is not directly mentioned in Scripture because Israel had kings. However, while considering the Scriptures mentioned above, why do you think voting would have been important? If voting is important, what reasons do Christians give for not voting? What would you say in response to those objections?
  3. Read 2 Chronicles 7:12-14, Ezekiel 3:16-21, 1 Kings 19:9-10, Nehemiah 1:5-11 and James 5:19-20. Many Christians feel the world is getting darker and there isn’t much believers can do. How do you think Elijah and Nehemiah felt similar about their nation? According to these verses, how should believers be proactive in impacting their nation for good?
Taking it Home:
  1. Do you feel your actions and response towards politics and the government has been biblical? If not, what are some things you can do differently? Take a moment to pray for the upcoming election.
