Getting to Know You:
  1. What is your favorite family tradition? Do any of these traditions keep you or your family's culture or history together? If so, how?

Digging Deeper:
  1. Read Acts 10:9-16, 28, Acts 11:1-18, Acts 15:1-20 and Galatians 2:11-16. Why was it difficult for the Jews to accept Gentiles as believers? Describe Peter’s journey of acceptance toward the Gentiles. In what situations do we find it challenging to accept people who are different from ourselves today?
  2. Read Matthew 9:10-13, Mathew 15:10-20, Acts 10:27-28, 34-35, Acts 11:1-3 and Galatians 3:28. Peter’s reason for not eating with the Gentiles was not because it violated God’s law but because it violated the strict rabbinic traditions about uncleanliness. Considering the example of Jesus, how should Peter have responded? Israel was to be a light to the Gentiles. Why were the Jews afraid of socializing with them? What are the implications for us today?
  3. Read Acts 2:1-6, Acts 10:44-48, Acts 11:15-18, 1 Corinthians 12:28-31, 1 Corinthians 14:2 and 1 Corinthians 14:39-30. In these passages, what was the evidence of the Spirit’s work in salvation? How did tongues in Acts 2 and Corinthians 14 differ, and what purpose did they play in each context? According to 1 Corinthians 12:28-31 why is it a mistake to say that everyone should speak in tongues?

Taking it Home:
  1. The Jews feared being contaminated by the Gentiles. How can we wisely live in the world but not of it? Take some time to pray for those who are struggling to find a balance.
