Getting to know you:
Digging Deeper:
Taking it Home:
- How did the political views of your childhood home shape your political leanings?
- Why do you think American politics is so polarizing?
Digging Deeper:
- Read Romans 13:1-7, 1 Timothy 2:1-3, 1 Peter 2:13-17 and Matthew 5:13-16. What roles does the government have and why should Christians obey their leaders? How should a Christian view politics? What are believers called to do while living under governing authorities?
- Read 1 Samuel 16:1, 1 Samuel 24:1-15 and 1 Samuel 26:6-12. David was chosen to replace Saul as king. How did David’s understanding about authority hinder him from following Abishai’s advice to kill Saul? From David’s perspective, what was his personal responsibility? What was God’s responsibility regarding his “Saul problem?” What are the implications for us when we find ourselves under poor leadership? Watchman Nee says, “We do not obey man but God’s authority in that man.” What are your thoughts?
- Read Psalm 33:12-22, Matthew 6:19-20, John 16:33 and Hebrews 13:5. How does trusting in a certain political party or government for protection create a false sense of security? What kind of security can we have while in this world? If we are feeling anxious what does that anxiety reveal about where our trust is placed?
Taking it Home:
- What has been your response and attitude towards your government leaders? If it hasn’t been a godly response take a minute to repent.
- Has the political and world news caused anxiety in your heart? Take a minute to affirm your trust in God and pray for one another.
