STUDY GUIDE
Out with the Old Man (Ephesians 4:17–19) – Rejecting the Darkness
Paul warns believers not to walk as the Gentiles walk—in futility, darkened understanding, hardened hearts, and spiritual blindness. The old life is marked by separation from God, insatiable desires, and a conscience that slowly becomes calloused. Sin never satisfies; it only hardens and blinds. We are called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light.
Something to think about: Are there areas in your life where you’ve grown spiritually insensitive because you’ve ignored the conviction of the Holy Spirit?
In with the New Man (Ephesians 4:20–24) – Putting Off and Putting On
The Christian life requires intentional action. We must put off the old self, like dirty clothes, and put on the new self, created in righteousness and holiness. This renewal begins in the mind. True repentance is a change of heart and direction. We are not renovated versions of the old person—we are new creations in Christ.
Something to think about: What “old clothes” are you still holding onto that Christ has already called you to throw away?
Live Like the New Man (Ephesians 4:25–32) – Walking It Out Daily
Living as the new man affects how we speak, work, forgive, and handle anger. We are to reject falsehood, resolve anger quickly, work generously, speak words that build up, and refuse bitterness. The Holy Spirit has sealed us—our lives reflect His ownership. Forgiveness is not optional; it flows from the forgiveness we have received in Christ.
Something to think about: Is there any bitterness or unforgiveness in your heart that is grieving the Holy Spirit and limiting your spiritual growth?
