Digging Deeper:
- Read Matthew 5:17-18, Romans 3:19-20, 31, Romans 5:20-6:14 and James 2:18-20. What was the purpose of the Law when we are justified by grace? How is the Law still relevant? A Pew study found that 62% of U.S. adults identify as Christians, but only 20% attend church weekly. What does this reflect about the American ‘Christian’? How would you respond to someone who said, “Since I am not under the law, I am free to do what I want”?
- Read Galatians 2:17-21, Ephesians 1:2-14, and Ephesians 2:8-10. What do we possess as children of God? If we are accepted by faith, why do many Christians feel they have to work for God’s acceptance? How does trying to gain God’s favor minimize His grace? Since Christ already accepts us, what should our motivation for good works be?
- Read Romans 6:5-11, Romans 12:1-3, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, Galatians 2:20, and Galatians 5:24. What does it look like to be crucified with Christ? How would you counsel someone who is struggling with sin? Read John 14:12, Galatians 5:16, and Philippians 4:10-13. What should it look like to live in resurrection power?
Taking it Home:
- Take a moment to reflect on your motivation for doing good works. Is it so you won’t feel guilty for not obeying? Could it be because you want God’s acceptance? Prayerfully accept His unconditional love and determine to live your life in response to it.
